Industrial Design Registration in India
The visual aesthetics of a product — its shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation — can be protected as a registered design. Design registration is a critical but often overlooked IP asset for manufacturers and product companies.
Overview
The Designs Act, 2000 protects the visual features of a product that appeal to the eye. A registered design gives the owner exclusive rights to apply the design to the relevant article for an initial period of 10 years, extendable by a further 5 years.
Advocate Chirag Bhatt is the author of Indian Designs Law (2013), making CBhatt Law Office one of the most specialised practices in India for design protection matters. This depth of expertise means clients receive advice grounded in an authoritative understanding of the Act, the registry's approach, and the jurisprudence.
Design registration is particularly valuable for consumer product manufacturers, furniture companies, packaging designers, and fashion and lifestyle brands. Unlike copyright (which has no registration requirement) or trademarks (which protect brand identifiers), registered design protection is specifically tailored to product aesthetics and is actively enforced against copycats.
