Overview
The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 provides statutory protection for GIs in India. Registration grants producers from the designated region the right to use the GI and prevents unauthorised use by others.
GI protection is commercially significant for producers of agricultural products, handicrafts, textiles, and food products associated with specific regions. It also supports export trade and the premium pricing that comes with authenticated geographic origin.
